Founded in 1784, John Smedley is one of the world's oldest manufacturing factories and a brand renowned for outstanding knitwear. The label began not with machine production but with simple cloth, before using the first fully fashioned knitting machine in 1825 to create the original 'long johns.' As the brand began exporting globally, it was established as a renowned British clothing label by 1914, and in the 1950s and 60s became a brand of choice worn by figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and the Beatles.
